Gary Brandt – Executive Director

He started as the Director of the new Boulder Jewish Teen Initiative in September 2014 and will be implementing all things Jewish youth in the Boulder area!  He graduated in 2006 from the University of Arizona with a Bachelors in Middle Eastern History and Modern Politics.  Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Gary has spent the past six years serving as the Senior Assistant Director of the URJ Jacobs Camp in Mississippi where he created meaningful community experiences focused on fun activities, personal growth, and skill building for the Deep South’s Jewish youth. Before working full time at Jacobs Gary was an ambulance driver, taught English in Japan, worked as a bicycle mechanic, and designed and constructed an ecological living area in Israel – a modern Renaissance man! Gary is dedicated to living a “slow” lifestyle; one that constructs time to enjoy food, friends, and our natural surroundings in healthy and sustainable ways. He brings his experience as an informal and experiential educator, Challenge Course Facilitator, and as an Eagle Scout to inspire and engage the teens in the greater Boulder area.

Shayna Hamburg – Program Director

Shayna is excited to bring her passion for learning, all things Jewish, and meeting new people to the Boulder Jewish Teen Initiative! Shayna graduated from the University of Colorado - Boulder with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Education. Although born and raised in Kansas City, she started building her connection to the Jewish community in Colorado from a young age when she attended Temple Emanuel's Shwayder Camp as a camper for 7 years.   She continued her journey there as a staff member for 4 years, serving once  as the Staff in Training (SIT) Coordinators where she oversaw the on-boarding of 32 new counselors.   Shayna stayed involved during college as a Sunday School teacher at Congregation Har Hashem and through Jewish programming on campus. After graduating, Shayna spent 10 months living in Lima, Peru learning Spanish and working on public health projects in various locations throughout South America. Outside of work, you will find her spending time with family and friends or exploring the great outdoors.
